Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest the lactose in milk and milk products. This results in gastrointestinal symptoms when milk or milk products are consumed. For lactose to be accepted into the body, it must be split into glucose and galactose. The enzyme that splits lactose into glucose and galactose is called lactase, and it is located in the small intestine. When there is little or no lactase the glucose and galactose do not split and symptoms of gas or diarrhea will result. Fortunately, lactase can be purchased in stores and will fix the problem when taken when milk or milk products are digested.

Schwa (sh + w + ah)

It was our intent to make the lessons in this program simple so they bring you as much success as possible as quickly as possible. We did this, too, with words that use the SCHWA.

WHAT DOES A SCHWA DO? Using a SCHWA makes it so that words can be said more rapidly and it makes the words soft. Many think we use it to be lazy!

WHAT IS A SCHWA? Mostly it is that, at times, when you see "a" "e" "o" or "u" in a word you make the word soft by using "uh", "ah,", "oh". (And at times you use "ih" when you see "y")

Think of reading a word with an "a" in it by using the "a" as in "age" or the "a" as in "cat. But the word you hear is just a tiny bit off, a tiny bit harsh. In that case you use a SCHWA.

Picture using the "a" as in the word "cat" in front of "go". That "a"+ "go" makes the word "ago". You will hear that it is a little bit harsh and a little bit off but if you use the "uh" SCHWA you will hear the word "ago" be soft and correct.

SAMPLES OF "A" IN FRONT OF A WORD THAT USES THE SCHWA:

ago = (uh) + go awake = (uh) w + ake ablaze = (uh) + bl + aze alone = (uh) l + one
again, against, attempt

SAMPLES OF "A" AT THE END OF A WORD THAT USES THE SCHWA:

Sandra = Sand r+(uh) Linda = Lin d+(uh) opera = o per (uh) Schwa = sch + w + (ah)

The word "lava" has two SCHWAS. The first "a" uses "ah" and the last "a" uses "uh". L + (ah) + v + (uh).

SAMPLES OF `O" USING THE "UH" SCHWA: onion, other, oven, done, none, some, sometime, something, somebody, love, dove, lovely, come, income, cover, recover, discover, mother, brother, money, honey, dozen, nothing, front, shove, shovel

Note: In pages before this page we presented many SCHWA words as words you simply had to remember.

Mostly when you hear the word and it is a bit off you simply try... "uh" then "ah" then "oh".

That's what the SCHWA is... mostly! It's that simple.
