It is important to understand that many words are made by putting two words together or adding a letter on the end of a word to change it a bit. The “root” word, the word from which the word came may still end in “e” and is therefore still a part of this “Sound Family”. For example, the word “shave” ends in a silent “e” but you can add an “r” to the end of “shave” and it will be “shaver” still in the “ave” “Sound Family”.
Also, some words are “Compound “ words. That means that they are two words put together. If the first word is one that would end in “e” then it fits into the Brown Book rule and you will have to look for the “Sound Family” in that word.
